Irrigation Method Affects Selenium Accumulation in Forage Brassica Species

چکیده
A greenhouse study was conducted in sand cultures to compare the effects of saline irrigation waters applied by two different methods, flooding and above-canopy sprinkling, on selenium (Se) accumulation by the forage brassicas, kale (Brassica oleracea L., cv. ‘‘Premier’’) and turnip (B. rapa L., cv. ‘‘Forage Star’’). The composition of the irrigation water was designed to simulate saline (7 dS m ) drainage effluent commonly encountered in the San Joaquin Valley of California, and being evaluated for reuse by irrigation of salt tolerant crops. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with two irrigation methods, two plant species (kale and turnip), four Se concentrations (0.25, 0.50, 1.0, and 2.0 mg L 1 Se–SeO4 2 ), and three replications. Kale was generally a more efficient Se accumulator than turnip. Shoot Se concentrations in kale and turnip increased with increasing *Correspondence: Donald L. Suarez, USDA-ARS, George E. Absorption and distribution of selenium in animals consuming canola grown for selenium phytoremediation.
Canola (Brassica napus) grown as a selected plant species for field phytoremediation of selenium (Se) may be harvested and utilized as Se-enriched forage for marginally Se-deficient lambs and cows. Two field studies were conducted under controlled conditions to evaluate the accumulation of Se into different animal tissues, including blood, excreta, and milk. In Study 1, treatments consisted of ...
متن کاملExpression of a mouse selenocysteine lyase in Brassica juncea chloroplasts affects selenium tolerance and accumulation
Selenium is an essential nutrient for many organisms, as part of certain selenoproteins. However, selenium is toxic at high levels, which is thought to be due to non-specific replacement of cysteine by selenocysteine leading to disruption of protein function. In an attempt to prevent non-specific incorporation of selenocysteine into proteins and to possibly enhance plant selenium tolerance and ...
متن کاملThe Endogenous Nitric Oxide Mediates Selenium-Induced Phytotoxicity by Promoting ROS Generation in Brassica rapa
Selenium (Se) is suggested as an emerging pollutant in agricultural environment because of the increasing anthropogenic release of Se, which in turn results in phytotoxicity. The most common consequence of Se-induced toxicity in plants is oxidative injury, but how Se induces reactive oxygen species (ROS) burst remains unclear. In this work, histofluorescent staining was applied to monitor the d...
متن کاملSelenium transformation studies during broccoli (Brassica oleracea) growing process by liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LC-ICP-MS).
Selenium uptake and transformation was studied in Se-enriched Broccoli (Brassica olearacea). Plants were grown in hydroponic culture and exposed during 40 days to Na2SeO3 (1 mg L(-1)). After growing, the plants were harvested and their different parts (roots, stems and fruit) were analyzed by ICP-MS or LC-ICP-MS. Se-species were identified and quantified after enzymatic extraction by using both...
متن کاملSelenium accumulation protects plants from herbivory by Orthoptera via toxicity and deterrence.
To investigate whether selenium (Se) accumulation in plants provides a chemical defense against generalist insect herbivores, the feeding preference and performance of a mix of orthopteran species were investigated. The selenium hyperaccumulator Stanleya pinnata and accumulator Brassica juncea were used in herbivory studies in the laboratory, and S. pinnata was also used in a manipulative field...
